Eremo antenna towers

DSC_0133NIKON D40X (200mm, f/5.6, 1/40 sec, ISO100)
Late evening, exiting as last visitors of the Infini. To Astronomical Park, I discovered this contrast between the Eremo technological antenna towers and the Alps behind them in their dusk colors. I just played a little bit with the colors to get a more realistic contrast feeling between the clouds (still in the sun) and the ground (already in the dark). I think that the contrast between the “vertical modern” and the “horizontal natural” subjects is an interesting comparison.

White Countryside

DSC_1883NIKON D40X (112mm, f/5.6, 1/13 sec, ISO100)
Early morning (I like this period of the day), travelling in coutryside, I saw that abandoned farm. There was still snow on the ground (even if not just fallen down). I was intrigued too by the solitary and naked trees: there’s a sum between the empty building, the lonely trees and the flat white ground. Loneliness maybe the right word to describe it

Cold morning

DSC_1875NIKON D40X (55mm, f/4.8, 1/40 sec, ISO100)
It was a really cold morning. The frost on the grass was quite thick even for the season. I took this image to communicate the sense of abandon which often in winter has the countryside. It’s a strong feeling, which together with silence leave you breathless. The use of sepia tint enhance this feeling.

Frosted leafs

Some fallen leaf in a gardenNIKON D40X (200mm, f/5.6, 1/15 sec, ISO100)

The autumn is leaving space for the winter. One of the signs of this period is the little frost you can find over a carpet of leafs in a public garden. Of course you need to wake up early in the morning to take this kind of pictures, because the frost is very delicate, and it’s quickly melted by the normal temperature of the period.

Small waterfalls and stone

DSC_1795NIKON D40X (105mm, f/36, 13 sec, ISO100)
I was testing my brand new 4x ND filter on these small waterfalls, when my eye was catched by a strange stone which was looking like flying few centimeters over the water, as an effect of a magician trick. I decided to change the image framing, so to have the stone in the middle and the water, on the contrary than usual, not as the main subject of the image. Something against the standard rules (aren’t the rules made in order to be broken?)

Future Christmas card?

DSC_1764NIKON D40X (70mm, f/11, 1/2.5 sec, ISO100)
Seen that the global warming effect seems to reduce the amount of snow which falls in winter, a future Christmas card image shooted in locations similar to this one (Lanzo Valley) could look alike this: trees with no leaf, just evergreens emerging from the quiescent nature, nothing white. The necessity of a more balanced approach towards the environment become more evident day by day, as pointed out by these kind of indicators too. The fact that this image could be considered appealing from the visual point of view is another story.

Corrugated iron rooftop

It was a uncertain a day with uncertain weather. Sometidsc_1739NIKON D40X (65mm, f/5, 1/400 sec, ISO100)
mes the sun won, sometimes not. I was looking at the sky often to check what was going to happen. Looking at this corrugated iron rooftp (underneath it there are cooling equipments) I was thinking that, maybe, isolating it from other building parts, just keeping it and the sky, could be a good idea. So I took the photo, and this image is the result, quite surreal. I’m almost sure that most viewers first impression is“what he hell is this?”, and yes, this is what happens when you concentrate the image just on a small part of what is in front of you. Without this “extreme” framing I believe that nobody (me first) was noticing that strange metal roof coverage. Technically speaking, I tried with several tricks to avoid the Moiré effect, but with very little results, so I leaved it as is.

Heavenly light

AlbaNIKON D40X (75mm, f/10, 1/250 sec, ISO100)

I was looking from home window during a heavy rain period, and among a shower and another, some sun rays peeped out through the clouds. They were looking to me like a sign of presence of a superior authority. I quickly took my camera and shoot this image.

Sky waves

DSC_1726NIKON D40X (170mm, f/11, 1/320 sec, ISO100)

Unlike its color version, this b/w image highlights the wave-like shape of the clouds, and so I prefer this version. At a closer look, the tiles on the roofs seem to align in waves too, thus blending the two parts of the image

Straight to the sky

dsc_1727NIKON D40X (95mm, f/11, 1/400 sec, ISO100)

Often we do not note how many things are just over our normal line of sight. If you try to leave the horizon out, just keeping what points directly to the sky, a different world appears. That’s what I’ve done with this picture, where what looks like envious signs of the human attempt to reach the sky remains in their inadequacy if compared with the target.

Clouds and rooftops

dsc_1730NIKON D40X (170mm, f/11, 1/250 sec, ISO100)

I was coming back home when I saw that clouds, with the classical cauliflower-like shape (quite unusual in autumn season), and when I tried to look at them with the camera, I saw the red of the rooftops, which  I did not noticed very well previously, so I included them in the picture.

Morning mist

dsc_1557NIKON D40X (105mm, f/5.6, 1/125 sec, ISO100)

Early morning, going to work driving in the Asti area, the first silent mists were all around me. I decide to stop briefly to take some pictures. In my mind the evanescence of the far background, the few trees in the middle and the soft sunlight render well the idea of the upcoming autumn season.

The respect of the waves

dsc_1720NIKON D40X (200mm, f/5.6, 1/320 sec, ISO100)

That old piece of wood root on the beach was intriguing. I had just started to examinate it when I shoot this picture, where the sea waves looks to have so much respect for that root that they did not have the courage to touch it, and prefer to keep around.

Underground hallway

dsc_1684NIKON D40X (18mm, f/18, 7.1 sec, ISO100)

I took this picture inspired by the silence of the moment and the aluminium of the chair, a solitary presence in a solitary hallway. I think this description is a bit emblematic about some aspect of modern life.

I was tempted to convert the picture in B/W, but looking better I found the general “champagne” tonality of the image, which has anyway very few colors, appealing with this dominance, so I choose to keep it as is.

Sunrise among poplars

dsc_1604NIKON D40X (105mm, f/5.6, 1/160 sec, ISO100)
Travelling to Milan on the highway I was looking to the autumn sunrise. When I saw on the side a poplar field, I quickly stopped to take this risky photo with the sun among them. Why risky? Because the poplar are thin, and the wind easily move them, so a multiple HDR shot means having some ghosts in the image. If you look carefully, you can see them. They can be corrected, of course, but I found that they gave to the image some kind of 3D appearance, so I left them.

Barolo Vineyard

DSC_1543NIKON D40X (200mm, f/5.6, 1/200 sec, ISO100)

The almost regular division between empty and cultivated rows in this Barolo vineyard catch my eye for their graphic geometry. The compression effect of the long lens made the rest.

Trees, cornfields and clouds

dsc_0615 NIKON D40X (46mm, f/8, 1/250 sec, ISO100)

I was coming back home from work when I saw these very symmetric twin trees. But the clouds were what convinced me to stop and take this shoot.

Trying to escape

DSC_1511 NIKON D40X (18mm, f/10, 1/402 sec, ISO100)
The Castello di Rivoli panoramic balcony length has been emphasized by the short lens, and the boy hurrying on it, together with the flare effect, adds something surreal to this image.

Different

DSC_1547NIKON D40X (200mm, f/5.6, 1/400 sec, ISO100)
My attention was captured by the difference among the white pole (squared section) and it’s shadow, where the “hat” is still thin, but the body is much more wide, like if the shadow would be the one of a different object.

Mont Cenis lake at dusk

DSC_1245NIKON D40X (18mm, f/7.1, 1/80 sec, ISO100)
The dusk is one of the best moment to take HDR shoots. I took this one on the Mont Cenis lake border just before the dusk became night.

Mont Cenis lake in the evening

DSC_1236NIKON D40X (32mm, f/7.1, 1/60 sec, ISO100)
We decided to stop on the northern side of the Mont Cenis lake for a picnic dinner. The Variselle fort on the side of the dam had a small cloud frozen in the sunlight. I mounted quickly the tripod to get this HDR shoot which shows well the magic of that moment.

Salin-de-Giraud

Gita vacanze 2008NIKON D40X (200mm, f/9, 1/125 sec, ISO100)

On the less known side of the Camargue (eastern side) there is a extraordinary location in the Salin-de-Giraud, a salt mine still in full activty. The water is really red, and the polarizer effect resulted in a even stronger color effect.

Rochemelon sunrise

DSC_0023NIKON D40X (200mm, f/5.6, 1/500 sec, ISO400)
I was going to work in the morning and I saw the Rocciamelone (Rochemelon) in the sunrise light. Luckily I had with me the camera, but overall the moon position was perfect (a pure case), so I stopped few minutes on the roadside to take this shoot.
