2012 winter came late, but it was cold and with a lot of snow. I took this picture when snow was falling and the light was low. I like the division in multiple levels, giving an idea about the image depth.
When visiting Messer Tulipano tulip exposition at the Castello di Pralormo, I saw this dandelion staying alone far from the tulips field. It set off me mixed feelings: loneliness, distinction, parting, standing out, … don’t know what’s the most appropriate, anyway here it is.
While observing this particular of the Duomo di Pisa (in the same Cathedral Square where it’s located the famous Leaning Tower), I saw that it looks like a B/W photo, but with an intense blue coming from the clear sky. I was fascinated by this tonality mix.
NIKON D40X (32mm, f/6.3, 1/160 sec, ISO100) March is a month where (in this part of Italy) the snow in plain is unusual, especially if the snowfall is abundant, so I quickly take this shoot which is an almost natural black and white one, even if not converted in grayscale.
NIKON D40X (150mm, f/5.6, 1/402 sec, ISO100) The oblique light which graze the snow make it looking similar to velvet. Light and shadows give the idea of smooth waves. I was impressed by the poetry of the evening light, and I tried to capture it.
NIKON D40X (130mm, f/5.6, 1/80 sec, ISO100) A lucky combination: a day with strong wind (so the sky is clear and blue), the position of the moon close to the mountain, and the subject is ready to be photographed. Just a touch of polarizer and it’s done. In my humble opinion, a minimalistic set of colors like here results in a stronger image.
The Lomçovak (end-over-end tumble) aerobatic maneuver perfomed by the Frecce Tricolori (the Italian military aerobatic team) soloist plane during the 100th anniversary Cameri airport show. The blue of the sky and the spinning shape of the white smoking trail had a good chromatic contrast.
NIKON D40X (200mm, f/5.6, 1/640 sec, ISO100) Walking in Saintes-Marie-de-la-Mer (Camargue, France) shoreline, I saw these nice lod-looking streetlamps, and with the light cloud overcast it was easy, just pushing the contrast a bit, obtain an almost black or white image.
NIKON D40X (200mm, f/10, 1/400 sec, ISO100) Some fishermen were on the Ceresole Reale dam lake (yet quite empty in this season). I was fascinated by their positions and the few colors present: just the blue over the b/w. I had to wait until some cloud shadows came to help to avoid a too much white background. The result is an image with some fairy-tale setting.
NIKON D40X (52mm, f/8, 1/160 sec, ISO100) I was wandering in Haute Provence – South of France, when I found this beautiful mountain. It remebered me the famous “El Capitan” rock in Yosemite National Park (this one is smaller, anyway) and the Ansel Adams images, so I stopped and found a good location where take this shoot, of course in black and white like the Master.This is a tribute to him and his art.
NIKON D40X (38mm, f/4.5, 1/40 sec, ISO100) Flying over the Alps, coming back home in the evening, I noticed the clouds below moved by strong winds in many waves, following the orography of the mountains. I found interesting this effect, especially if compared with the clear sky over them. I choose to use black and white because it stress the attention to the wave shapes.

NIKON D40X (82mm, f/5.3, 1/80 sec, ISO100) Early morning after the biggest snowfall of the last 20 years here. I was fascinated by the symmetry given by the trees and the garden seats. Also the “sky” done by the branches was intriguing. The image is b/w, but there were so little different colors, that also in color would have been almost the same.

NIKON D40X (200mm, f/5.6, 1/50 sec, ISO100) During a pause of snowfall I took this image from my home window. With the standard white balance setting it turned out to be so blue, and I kept this because it was the real light of that moment. For sure it looks very cold, and that’s true: it was a really cold day! The brushwood looks really drown in the snow.
NIKON D40X (112mm, f/5.6, 1/13 sec, ISO100) Early morning (I like this period of the day), travelling in coutryside, I saw that abandoned farm. There was still snow on the ground (even if not just fallen down). I was intrigued too by the solitary and naked trees: there’s a sum between the empty building, the lonely trees and the flat white ground. Loneliness maybe the right word to describe it
NIKON D40X (70mm, f/11, 1/2.5 sec, ISO100) Seen that the global warming effect seems to reduce the amount of snow which falls in winter, a future Christmas card image shooted in locations similar to this one (Lanzo Valley) could look alike this: trees with no leaf, just evergreens emerging from the quiescent nature, nothing white. The necessity of a more balanced approach towards the environment become more evident day by day, as pointed out by these kind of indicators too. The fact that this image could be considered appealing from the visual point of view is another story.
I was coming back home when I saw that clouds, with the classical cauliflower-like shape (quite unusual in autumn season), and when I tried to look at them with the camera, I saw the red of the rooftops, which I did not noticed very well previously, so I included them in the picture.
NIKON D40X (200mm, f/5.6, 1/400 sec, ISO100) My attention was captured by the difference among the white pole (squared section) and it’s shadow, where the “hat” is still thin, but the body is much more wide, like if the shadow would be the one of a different object.
