NIKON D40X (42mm, f/4.5, 1/13 sec, ISO100) Looks an antique photo, even if done today, due the total lack of modernity signs (wires, lights,…). A very narrow road on the S. Giulio island (Orta Lake). The curve and the light at its end may also ideally raise questions about what’s behind it, adding some suspance to the picture.
In this picture most of the weather and lights can be found: sun, darkness, rain, clouds, blue sky, natural light, artificial light. All in a single picture: it is not so usual find all them together. Isn’t it beautiful?
During a party with live music I shooted this image, without great faith in what could be the result. When looking after the images, I discovered that the final effect was quite interesting (at least to my eyes, of course). 2012 winter came late, but it was cold and with a lot of snow. I took this picture when snow was falling and the light was low. I like the division in multiple levels, giving an idea about the image depth.
The contrast between the inside and outside light has always fascinated me, and this candid image show this. Furthermore this picture make me think that the subject was curios about what’s over there, hence the title.
I took this picture during an airshow. It’s a classical warbird (WW II era) carefully restored. It’s a classical picture, which I like because the wing has the same inclination as the far background clouds (the plane was turning around a pylon).
Glamorous Elena, a beautiful Van’s RV-7 belonging to a friend of mine, resting in the afternoon in Valdera airfield. The plane shape from this angle, the propeller position, diagonal to the image, and the strong colors are the reason for this picture.
The Lomçovak (end-over-end tumble) aerobatic maneuver perfomed by the Frecce Tricolori (the Italian military aerobatic team) soloist plane during the 100th anniversary Cameri airport show. The blue of the sky and the spinning shape of the white smoking trail had a good chromatic contrast.
NIKON D40X (200mm, f/5.6, 1/640 sec, ISO100) I was in mountain during a quite gray day. Sometimes a small clear patch happened in the clouds, and I was lucky enough to capture these peaks which came out for few minutes. They make me think to a dreamy atmosphere. The picture was taken in Lanzo valley (NW Italy)
NIKON D40X (18mm, f/5.6, 1/125 sec, ISO100) Someone believe that just tropical islands have the sea transparent almost as glass. It’s not true: I took this picture at the Isle of Saint Honrat, just in front of Cannes (France), from the top of the old monaster of the Cistercian monks (which still today are living on the island).
NIKON D40X (150mm, f/5.6, 1/640 sec, ISO100) The WAG 2009 (World Air Games) finished on June 13, 2009, but the next day an airshow took place at Turin Aeritalia airport. Many interesting planes (but also many other flying machines) were present. Among them an erobatic team using ultralight planes (Alpi Pioneer). I’ve shoot a lot of images, but I prefer this one for it’s colors and for the shapes of the smoking trails. The diagonal main line and off-centered subjects adds even more dynamism to the picture.
NIKON D40X (130mm, f/5.6, 1/400 sec, ISO100) Again from the Turin World Air Games 2009: at the end of the hang-gliding speedrun round, Andrea Iemma (an Italian pilot) uses his feet to slow down the speed just before landing on the raft. This image make me think to some kind of swan splashing in the lake. The backlight helped a lot to have the water textures and the mix of colors: an ideal shoot condition to get this kind of pictures from the shore line, in fact there were a lot of photographers to capture these magic moments.
NIKON D40X (18mm, f/8, 1/250 sec, ISO100) The World Air Games, take place in Turin (Italy) from 6 to 9 June 2009 (you can see a lot of infos on the WAG2009 website). I’m one of the judges for the Paragliding Accuracy competition, which is on the Avigliana lake: The landing spot is on a raft in the lake (the same used by the paragliding aerobatics, hang-gliding aerobatics and speed-run competition). I don’t have much spare time to take photos during my duty as judge, but I’m lucky to be in a privileged position, so I was able to get some pictures while on the landing field. This is one of them. NIKON D40X (38mm, f/4.5, 1/40 sec, ISO100) Flying over the Alps, coming back home in the evening, I noticed the clouds below moved by strong winds in many waves, following the orography of the mountains. I found interesting this effect, especially if compared with the clear sky over them. I choose to use black and white because it stress the attention to the wave shapes.

NIKON D40X (18mm, f/7.1, 1.3 sec, ISO100) This is a very classical style picture, very didactic (also known as a “postcard picture”) of the Castle of Rivoli. It’s style was inspired by the wonderful HDR images by Trey Ratcliff blog Stuckincustoms.com. Walking around the castle, I found what was looking to me as a good place and a good light to shoot a picture like the Trey ones.
NIKON D40X (34mm, f/7.1, 1/2 sec, ISO100) Looking to the sky I saw this color contrast between the evening blue and the reddish clouds. I moved to a position where the winterly naked trees could be included in the image. They added a sort of silhouette and texture to the image, so to avoid a picture quite similar to a flag reproduction. I see this image both graphic and abstract as well as a style research picture.
NIKON D40X (40mm, f/7.1, 7.1 sec, ISO100) I had some spare time to spend, so I climbed up to the square in front of the Rivoli castle, with the Collegiata Alta bell-tower and Turin hill in the background . Even if not late, it was almost night, and i took some shots to get some colors which are available just for few minutes at the dusk. Color balance in this kind of image is always a compromise, and the contrast between the cold sky and the warm artificial light usually results in nice postcard-like pictures, especially using HDR technique.
The autumn is leaving space for the winter. One of the signs of this period is the little frost you can find over a carpet of leafs in a public garden. Of course you need to wake up early in the morning to take this kind of pictures, because the frost is very delicate, and it’s quickly melted by the normal temperature of the period.
Often we do not note how many things are just over our normal line of sight. If you try to leave the horizon out, just keeping what points directly to the sky, a different world appears. That’s what I’ve done with this picture, where what looks like envious signs of the human attempt to reach the sky remains in their inadequacy if compared with the target.
I was coming back home when I saw that clouds, with the classical cauliflower-like shape (quite unusual in autumn season), and when I tried to look at them with the camera, I saw the red of the rooftops, which I did not noticed very well previously, so I included them in the picture.
Early morning, going to work driving in the Asti area, the first silent mists were all around me. I decide to stop briefly to take some pictures. In my mind the evanescence of the far background, the few trees in the middle and the soft sunlight render well the idea of the upcoming autumn season.
That old piece of wood root on the beach was intriguing. I had just started to examinate it when I shoot this picture, where the sea waves looks to have so much respect for that root that they did not have the courage to touch it, and prefer to keep around.
I took this picture inspired by the silence of the moment and the aluminium of the chair, a solitary presence in a solitary hallway. I think this description is a bit emblematic about some aspect of modern life.
I was tempted to convert the picture in B/W, but looking better I found the general “champagne” tonality of the image, which has anyway very few colors, appealing with this dominance, so I choose to keep it as is.
