Southern France: in the territory of Rustrel (Luberon) there is an extraordinary location, called the Colorado Provencal del Rustrel, where ochra was extracted and used for textile coloring until several years ago. Red and yellow ochra and their variations are present in this almost lunar-like, desertic natural park. Fantastic and beautiful, it seems incredible that such kind of things can exist on the Earth.
NIKON D40X (32mm, f/6.3, 1/160 sec, ISO100) March is a month where (in this part of Italy) the snow in plain is unusual, especially if the snowfall is abundant, so I quickly take this shoot which is an almost natural black and white one, even if not converted in grayscale.
NIKON D40X (130mm, f/5.6, 1/80 sec, ISO100) A lucky combination: a day with strong wind (so the sky is clear and blue), the position of the moon close to the mountain, and the subject is ready to be photographed. Just a touch of polarizer and it’s done. In my humble opinion, a minimalistic set of colors like here results in a stronger image.
NIKON D40X (55mm, f/5.6, 1/125 sec, ISO100) Walking in the surroundings of my home, I saw the great contrast between the oblique row of corns, the bare tree and the sky. I admit I pushed a bit with contrast, saturation and so on, but this time, NO HDR! 🙂
NIKON D40X (52mm, f/8, 1/160 sec, ISO100) I was wandering in Haute Provence – South of France, when I found this beautiful mountain. It remebered me the famous “El Capitan” rock in Yosemite National Park (this one is smaller, anyway) and the Ansel Adams images, so I stopped and found a good location where take this shoot, of course in black and white like the Master.This is a tribute to him and his art.
NIKON D40X (82mm, f/5.3, 1/80 sec, ISO100) Early morning after the biggest snowfall of the last 20 years here. I was fascinated by the symmetry given by the trees and the garden seats. Also the “sky” done by the branches was intriguing. The image is b/w, but there were so little different colors, that also in color would have been almost the same.

NIKON D40X (200mm, f/5.6, 1/250 sec, ISO100) Coming back home and looking to the opposite side of the upcoming setting sun, I saw these hoar frosted trees and their background. The dark sky behind was too much appealing to just look and forget, so I quickly stopped (it was really cold) to take this shoot , an unperfect one, but -again- I liked too much the colors to avoid taking this one.
NIKON D40X (200mm, f/5.6, 1/40 sec, ISO100) Late evening, exiting as last visitors of the Infini.To Astronomical Park, I discovered this contrast between the Eremo technological antenna towers and the Alps behind them in their dusk colors. I just played a little bit with the colors to get a more realistic contrast feeling between the clouds (still in the sun) and the ground (already in the dark). I think that the contrast between the “vertical modern” and the “horizontal natural” subjects is an interesting comparison.
The autumn is leaving space for the winter. One of the signs of this period is the little frost you can find over a carpet of leafs in a public garden. Of course you need to wake up early in the morning to take this kind of pictures, because the frost is very delicate, and it’s quickly melted by the normal temperature of the period.
NIKON D40X (105mm, f/36, 13 sec, ISO100) I was testing my brand new 4x ND filter on these small waterfalls, when my eye was catched by a strange stone which was looking like flying few centimeters over the water, as an effect of a magician trick. I decided to change the image framing, so to have the stone in the middle and the water, on the contrary than usual, not as the main subject of the image. Something against the standard rules (aren’t the rules made in order to be broken?)
NIKON D40X (70mm, f/11, 1/2.5 sec, ISO100) Seen that the global warming effect seems to reduce the amount of snow which falls in winter, a future Christmas card image shooted in locations similar to this one (Lanzo Valley) could look alike this: trees with no leaf, just evergreens emerging from the quiescent nature, nothing white. The necessity of a more balanced approach towards the environment become more evident day by day, as pointed out by these kind of indicators too. The fact that this image could be considered appealing from the visual point of view is another story.
