Jet contrails in the evening

Contrail

NIKON D40X (200mm, f/5.6, 1/80 sec, ISO200)

A curious effect of low horizon light in the evening and the time evolution of some contrail few minutes after the jets passed. Nice and poetic (and no, they are not chemtrails, which are just baloney)

Francesco Fornabaio

DSC_9462NIKON D40X (200mm, f/5.6, 1/250 sec, ISO100)

Today, 21-SEP-2014, Francesco Fornabaio, airshowman, pilot and poet, died in an accident during an airshow in Venice. This is the last photo that I took of him, one week before the mishap, and there will not be other more. It’s not the best one I have of him, but it’s the last, so this is my tribute to him. Requiescat in pace, Francesco.

Aigues Mortes

Gita ad Aigues MortesNIKON D40X (18mm, f/11, 1/500 sec, ISO800)

… and dead was I too! (Aigues Mortes = roughly “Dead Waters”). Well over 30 C° the walk of this magnificent town walls was a bit hard to bear. Only the beauty of the city and the fantastic colors of the Camargue helped me to complete it. The small clouds at high altitute didn’t help to screen the sun, but they were marvelous to look at and, of course, to photograph. The polarizer helped to increase the color depth, helping too the impression of a really hot day. After the walk, the icecream was very welcome!

Monte Rosa glacier

DSC_8184 NIKON D40X (200mm, f/5.6, 1/1000 sec, ISO100)

Taken from the Loccia lake, at the beginning of the Belvedere glacier in Macugnaga (NW Italy), during a day where the weather changed several times, showing the sinuosity of the various snow layers. Another image which is inspired by the Ansel Adams works (obviously).

Lighthouse windy sunset

dsc_5824 NIKON D40X (82mm, f/5.6, 1/500 sec, ISO100)

Classical clear sky of a windy day (looking carefully the pin leaf you the wind effect is noticeable), and a classical lighthouse (here in Cap Ferrat, France), results in a classical image, full of colors.

Les Baux de Provence rocks

DSC_5124NIKON D40X (18mm, f/8, 1/250 sec, ISO100)
Walking around the base of the castle of Les Baux de Provence (southern France)I saw this nice texture effect of the water flowing in the centuries on the vertical rocks, and I couldn’t resist to take a shoot. Despite to the apparencies, it’s not an HDR image.

Saintes Maries de la Mer streetlamps

DSC_4441NIKON D40X (200mm, f/5.6, 1/640 sec, ISO100)
Walking in Saintes-Marie-de-la-Mer (Camargue, France) shoreline, I saw these nice lod-looking streetlamps, and with the light cloud overcast it was easy, just pushing the contrast a bit, obtain an almost black or white image.

Notre Dame du Roc

DSC_3151NIKON D40X (18mm, f/5.6, 1/400 sec, ISO100)
A wonderful small church over the town of Castellane (Haute Provence – South of France). The church is placed on the top of a rock, which, even if when seen from the town looks a demanding hike, is an easy and nice walk of half-hour. When on the top, I was fascinated by how the church is well amalgamented with the mountain, and by the silence. The presence of nice clouds helped me to take this shoot when resting on the side of the  rock.

Above the clouds

DSC_2196NIKON D40X (38mm, f/4.5, 1/40 sec, ISO100)
Flying over the Alps, coming back home in the evening, I noticed the clouds below moved by strong winds in many waves, following the orography of the mountains. I found interesting this effect, especially if compared with the clear sky over them. I choose to use black and white because it stress the attention to the wave shapes.

Update: this image has been one of the 15  most popular pictures in the weekly themes by VFXY for the July 24, 2009 week, when the theme was “Null or Empty”

Roof tiles and snow

DSC_2084NIKON D40X (200mm, f/36, 1/2 sec, ISO100)
Cold, ugly, with snow and rain. These are the adjective which came up to my mind describing this day. Looking the gray sky I saw anyway these roof tiles, with their quiet order which doesn’t care of the weather. I like their strong appearance, and their classical color. The result is this graphical and somehow abstract (again!) image.

Rivoli by night

DSC_2061NIKON D40X (40mm, f/7.1, 7.1 sec, ISO100)
I had some spare time to spend, so I climbed up to the square in front of the Rivoli castle, with the Collegiata Alta bell-tower and Turin hill in the background . Even if not late, it was almost night, and i took some shots to get some colors which are available just for few minutes at the dusk. Color balance in this kind of image is always a compromise, and the contrast between the cold sky and the warm artificial light usually results in nice postcard-like pictures, especially using HDR technique.

Frosted leafs

Some fallen leaf in a gardenNIKON D40X (200mm, f/5.6, 1/15 sec, ISO100)

The autumn is leaving space for the winter. One of the signs of this period is the little frost you can find over a carpet of leafs in a public garden. Of course you need to wake up early in the morning to take this kind of pictures, because the frost is very delicate, and it’s quickly melted by the normal temperature of the period.

Clouds and rooftops

dsc_1730NIKON D40X (170mm, f/11, 1/250 sec, ISO100)

I was coming back home when I saw that clouds, with the classical cauliflower-like shape (quite unusual in autumn season), and when I tried to look at them with the camera, I saw the red of the rooftops, which  I did not noticed very well previously, so I included them in the picture.
